Paxil Linked to Increased Risk of Heart Valve Damage
According to recent studies serious heart valve damage and heart valve defects have been linked in infants born to mothers who were administered Paxil during pregnancy. These Paxil related heart valve defects include atrial septal defects or ventricular septal defects. The studies mentioned in the FDA Paxil alert indicate that women who took Paxil during the first three months of pregnancy were about one and a half to two times as likely to have a baby with a congenital heart defect compared with women who took other antidepressants or women in the general population.
Paxil - Ventricular Septal Defects (VSD)
Septal defects are sometimes called a "hole" in the heart. A defect between the heart's two lower chambers (the ventricles) is called a ventricular septal defect (VSD). When there is a large opening between the ventricles, a large amount of oxygen-rich (red) blood from the heart's left side is forced through the defect into the right side. Then it's pumped back to the lungs, even though it's already been refreshed with oxygen. This is inefficient, because already-oxygenated blood displaces blood that needs oxygen. This means the heart, which must pump more blood, may enlarge from the added work. High blood pressure may occur in the lungs' blood vessels because more blood is there. Over time, this increased pulmonary hypertension may permanently damage the blood vessel walls.
Paxil - Atrial Septal Defects (ASD)
Atrial septal defect (ASD) is a congenital heart defect. In fetal circulation, there is normally an opening between the two atria (the upper chambers of the heart) to allow blood to bypass the lungs. This opening usually closes around the time the baby is born. If the ASD is persistent, blood continues to flow from the left to the right atria. This is called a shunt. Sometimes, blood flows from the right atrium to the left atrium (a right to left shunt).
ASD is not very common. When the person has no other congenital defect, symptoms may be absent, particularly in children. Symptoms may begin any time after birth through childhood. Individuals with ASD are at an increased risk for developing a number of complications including:
